Dear Editor,
When Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Guliani pressured Arizona officials to declare fraud in the 2020 election he said “We have lots of theories but no proof.”
You’d think that would end the matter right there Before that, over 60 judges, many of them Republicans, some nominated by Trump have denied to hear such fraud cases because of lack of evidence; the Supreme Court, with a 6-3 Republican majority, three of them nominated by Trump, refused to hear the case; and Trump’s attorney general Bill Barr, who regularly threw ethic concerns out the window to do Trump’s bidding, declared emphatically there was no evidence of any widespread fraud.
And yet the conspiracy theories continue. Why? You just have to look at the many Republican officials who pander to their base by spreading the Big Lie. They are so afraid of losing their seats in Congress and other elect-ed positions if they say anything to contradict the former president. This mass cowardness is unprecedented in American politics. When the judiciary committee during the Watergate hearings voted to impeach President Nixon, leading Republicans did their right and patriotic duty and met with him to say he lacked the votes to escape conviction in the senate.. While Nixon was guilty of serious crimes, what he did was more like blowing a red light compared to Trump’s misdeeds. But they put their country above their party.
If only our currrent leaders would have their courage.
And they know better. Many reporters say lots of officials have acknowledged this privately, and off the record. To keep them in line Trump continues on his revenge tour, threatening with running primary opponents against them, and actually doing so if they thwart him, And as we have seen, many of them are successful. I’d like to point out that most congress members are wealthy, many of them are multimillionaires. With their connections they can easily find jobs in the private sector that pay much more than they make now. Apparently they would rather hang on to their power. If only they could locate their long-lost backbone and tell the truth, even if it means losing their congressional seat.
