Letter to the Editor: Justice for All?

Posted

Dear Editor,
How does a man plead guilty to five counts of sexual acts upon a child under the age of 14 and get no jail time? In the same county, in the same period of time, another man pleads guilty to one count of sexual activity upon a child under the age of 12 and gets 8 years. Both men were in their 70s.
There’s something seriously wrong here. Was it because the judge felt compassion in one case and not the other? Did one criminal have more money than the other? Whatever the reason it’s not right.
What about the victim of the no jail time criminal? She will have to carry this with her forever. She lived in the home with the perpetrator. After all, she was the granddaughter. She was stuck in a situation that she could not get out of. It was as if she was a prisoner being held captive. What happens to her now? Mr Carroll gets to walk free.
We did not get justice for all. We all need to be ashamed of this injustice.
