It’s not exactly the first games of the season, but multiple teams will have the opportunity to see how they stack up against other opponents before the games count.
The St. Vincent and Perryville football teams, the St. Vincent, Perryville, and Saxony volleyball teams, and the Perryville and Saxony boys soccer teams, and Perryville softball team will compete in jamborees in the coming days to prepare for the first game.
Perryville football will travel to St. Pius and compete with the host Lancers and Crystal City at 6 p.m. The teams will play 18 offensive and 18 defensive snaps against each other. The location of the Pirates’ jamboree is a slight change from past years that saw them go to Jefferson R-7. The Pirates recently completed its annual green/white scrimmage and football coach Brent Roth is anxious to face other squads but is focused on getting his team ready for the season.
“We will keep working on ourselves and keep doing what we have been doing,” Roth said. “We have everything in, but now we have to perfect it.”
The St. Vincent football team will travel to Scott City to take on Portageville, East Prairie and Kelly at 6 p.m.
St. Vincent coach Tim Schumer is excited to get out there and hit someone else that is not in blue and gold.

“This will be the first time that we will play someone else that isn’t ourselves,” he said. “I just want us to go out and execute and play hard and put things on film for us to work on in the lead-up to week 1.”
The Perryville and St. Vincent volleyball teams will travel to Ste. Genevieve and take on the host Dragons and Valle Catholic at 5:30 p.m.
The Saxony Lutheran volleyball team will travel to Farmington to take on the host Knights, along with St. Paul, and North County at 6 p.m. Each team will play two sets to 15 points against each other.
The Perryville boys soccer team will stay home and compete with Sikeston and Northwest at 4:30 p.m August 23. The Pirates competed in a varsity showcase in July and have been working on things ever since in preparation for the jamboree, according to Perryville Soccer coach Jerry Fulton.
Saxony Lutheran will travel to North County Saturday, August 21 to compete with the host Raiders and Gateway Science. The Crusaders will play two 35-minute games against their opponents.
Perryville softball will compete in a jamboree at home starting at 4:30 p.m with Hillsboro, De Soto and Sikeston. The Pirates return a key core from a team that finished fourth in Class 3 one year ago.
