St. Vincent makes Valle Catholic ‘play’ in loss

St. Vincent football coach Tim Schumer didn’t want his team to look at the scoreboard following the game. The score may have said that the Valle Catholic Warriors won in a lopsided game, but for Schumer it was a moral victory of sorts.
“We made them play,” he said again and again.
One year after the Warriors put up 63 points in the first half against the Indians, this was a game into the second half. Although Valle Catholic did put the contest away using the running game to hand St. Vincent a 56-14 defeat on Friday at St. Vincent Stadium.
“Our defense did a good job of bending, but not breaking and getting a couple of turnovers and converting an onside kick to start the second half,” Schumer said. “That gave us a little momentum to have them keep playing for three quarters.”
It was that onside kick recovered by Kaden Kassel that stole a possession from the Warriors to start the second half, and the Indians were able to cash in for points.
Jacob Kapp caught a long pass to the Warriors’ one-yard line and Kassel scored on the next play with a quick pass to the sideline as he was left uncovered. The Warriors led 27-14 with 11:40 left in the third quarter.
From there however, the Warriors took charge.
Valle Catholic scored 22 points in the third quarter, which included marching down on the ensuing drive for a one-yard touchdown run by Bryce Giesler. Valle scored on the subsequent two-point conversion to widen the lead to 35-14. Quarterback Chase Fallert led the Warriors with 213 rushing yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns. Giesler added 159 yards rushing, and three touchdowns, while Alex Viox added a 68-yard and a score and Carson Tucker provided a long 62-yard run for the Warriors. It was the running attack for the Warriors that got the job done as Fallert was just 3-11 for 53 yards through the air.

“It’s pick your poison with Valle, Schumer said. “If they find success on the ground, they will stay on the ground. If they see they have you outmanned through the air, they will attack you that way. They put you in a bind, and that’s why they are tough to beat.”
The game could not have started out any worse for the Indians as Valle’s Luke McClure intercepted St. Vincent quarterback Christian Schaaf on the Indians’ first play from scrimmage to take a 7-0 lead.
The Warrior offense was hampered by 10 penalties and were forced in multiple turnovers in the first half. The penalties forced the Warriors into long third down conversions, which the Indians used to get its defense off the field.
One of those turnovers led to the first Indians score. Giesler fumbled with two minutes left in the first half at the St. Vincent 20-yard line. A few plays later Schaaf found Trevor Moonier for an 81-yard touchdown with 53 seconds before halftime.
“We were able to find success to put some points on the board,” Schumer said. “That’s big for our confidence going forward. Our two losses have been to some great teams and I’ve been telling the guys that that can only help us.”
St. Vincent hopes those lessons help this week as they travel to Herculaneum on Friday, Sept. 17. St. Vincent has won the last five matchups with Herculaneum dating back to 2015. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Herculaneum fell to Jefferson 48-14 in week two. It should be a familiar foe for the Indians as they take on Blane Boss, who took over the Blackcat program after four seasons with Perryville.
“They will be a run heavy team and will be ready to go,” Schumer said. “We will need a good week of practice this week.”
