In a game that had postseason implications, Saxony Lutheran baseball was able to edge a potential district opponent.
Saxony Lutheran edged St. Vincent 3-2 on April 2. The two teams are in the same district in Class 2 and this could be a game fans would see in the district tournament.
With the win, Saxony is still playing well, winning six of their last seven games.
St. Vincent was able to strike first in the first inning, when three walks and a catcher interference call brought in a run to give St. Vincent a 1-0 lead.
Saxony answered in the second when David Weinhold doubled to kick off the winning and Reid Bengsten moved the runner to third with a sac bunt.
Isaac Koenig drove the run home with a RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.
The two teams played even from there until Saxony broke the tie with a pair of runs in the fourth inning
Blake Gaebler had an RBI single to right and Owen Tarry walked with the bases loaded to give Saxony a 3-1 lead.
St. Vincent answered in the fifth inning when Andrew Schumer scored on a passed ball to narrow the Saxony lead to 3-2.
St. Vincent had a chance to tie the game in the sixth inning when Nick Buchheit started the inning off with a single to centerfield. Tyler Hennemann moved him down to second base with a bunt, with one out. But the next two batters failed to get the tying run home with a groundout to the shortstop and a pop out to the pitcher.
Owen Tarry was good on the mound for Saxony going six ining and gave just four hits on the day. He struck out six and walked four batters.
Weinhold hit another RBI double in the second inning to highlight a five-run second inning for Saxony Lutheran. Bengston also hit an RBI single for the second consecutive inning and Tarry also drove in his second run of the game on a sacrifice fly. ‘
Weinhold hit his third RBI double of the game in the fourth inning to score Tarry to start a six-run rally to trigger the run rule. Tarry led off the inning being hit by pitch only to come back and ground into a fielder’s choice to score J Sparks for the 15th run.
Along with Weinhold, Bengston went 3-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Crusaders. Brayden Moore went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Tarry went 1-for-2 with three RBIs, and both James Hope and Issac Koenig drove in a run and scored as pinch hitters.
