Letter to the Editor – One Nation Under Whose God?

Posted

Dear Editor

America’s first Christian settlers (Pilgrims/Puritans – 1621) were fleeing an oppressive Christian Church of England for being too Roman Catholic. Perry County’s first Christian settlers (Saxon Orthodox Lutheran Immigration – 1839) were fleeing Prussia’s union of Lutheran and Reformed religious sects into its largest Christian Protestant Church.

In both instances, Christians were seeking religious freedom from other Christian oppressors. Our First Amendment provided a brilliant solution to oppressive religions by separating them from exercising political power over religions.

Currently, of the 77% of Missourians who identify as Christian, 16% are Roman Catholic, 16% are Protestant, 6% are Black Protestants, 1% are Mormon, and 36% are Evangelical. So to those who would advocate for Christian Nationalism and remove the barrier between Church and State, I ask one question. Which Christian nation?

Respectfully submitted,
