Perryville tops Marquette Catholic in non-conference game

The Perryville Pirates won last Friday's non-conference game against Marquette Catholic with a score of 49-14.

After driving around two hours from Perryville to Alton, Ill., and back, the Perryville Pirates are now 6-1 with a lopsided win over the Marquette Catholic squad, which, after Friday night’s loss against the Pirates, hasn’t won a game all season.

While Marquette is far from the toughest opponent Perryville has faced this season, it is another win under the belt for the Pirates, who are pushing forward in the Quad County Conference.

Pirates coach Brent Roth mentioned several players who were standouts.

“Kayd Luckey had a big game,” Roth said. “He had four passing touchdowns and two rushing. Brett Bohnert had a big game on offense and defense. He had an interception, and then he had a big touchdown run. It’s good to see him get going again. And then Dominic Seiler got going offensively with two touchdowns. I’ve been trying to get him going this year, and he was finally able to break through.”

While coach Roth was happy the team added another win to the season, he admitted that there were times Friday night when he could tell that his team wasn’t playing its best.

“That's something we're always working on — to get better each week,” he said. “We're still not the best football team that we can be, but we executed for the most part and took care of the football. And we were able to go up there and come away with a win. We played really well. We came out pretty hot, offensively and defensively, but I think once we got up a little bit, it seemed like we sort of let off the gas.

“So, I gave them a good butt-chewing at halftime. I told them that we can't quit playing hard and we can't quit trying to score. We can’t have mercy on people just because we're doing well because we've had that bite us in the butt already this year —letting up and letting teams back in the game. So, they responded. They came out in the second half and played a lot better.”
This week, the Pirates play their final home game of the regular season when they meet Herculaneum for Homecoming.

“I coached under coach Boss, and we have a pretty good relationship,” Roth said. “They've been having a rough year. They got their first win finally last week. I know they’ve got some seniors and things like that, but for whatever reason, they haven't been able to get too many wins this year. That being said, they're coming off their first win, so maybe they're starting to figure some things out a little bit, but we just gotta’ worry about ourselves and do our thing and not have too many penalties and don't turn the ball over. And then, on top of not being distracted by all the other stuff that goes along with homecoming, making sure that we're focusing on the football game. Let all that other stuff come when the game's over.”

The final regular game of the season will be Friday, Oct. 25, against Cuba.
