Saxony girls win district title over Scott City

Saxony Lutheran left for a while, but now that they are back in Class 3, it’s like they never left.
The Crusaders edged Scott City 60-53 in the Class 3, District 2 tournament on Friday in Bloomfield.
Sanxony moved up to Class 4 in 2020 after the intro duction of the success factor. Prior to that, they enjoyed a run of eight straight championships, which included a fourth-place state finish in 2014 and a state runner-up in 2016, and many trips to the state quarterfinals. The Crusaders reached the final round of the tournament by defeating Woodland in the semifinals, who won three straight district titles in Saxony’s absence.
Saxony senior Evie Caruso led with 19 points while both Rebecca Johnson and Abigail Haley scored 14 points. The Crusaders were leading by a single point going into the final quarter, but had an offensive explosion, scoring 22 points in the fourth to edge the Rams.
The Crusaders had to come from behind, as the Rams got to the free throw frequently shooting all but one of their free throws in the opening period, going 9-of-12.

Lilyan Landis led the Rams with 24 points and Scott City relied heavily on her, especially in the second half as she scored 15 of the Rams’ 28 points, including a pair of buzzer beaters to end quarters.
Saxony Lutheran took on Twin Rivers, the C3D1 champion, in the sectional round of the Class 3 State Tournament on Monday, Feb. 26. The seniors will be experiencing this level of basketball for the first time in the final year of high school

Saxony used a big second half to pull away from Twin Rivers 58-35 pn Monday in a Class 3 Sectional.
Leading 27-21 at the half, Saxony used a 15-2 run in the third quarter powered by guard Rebecca Johnson to create separation.
Johnson led the Crusaders with 23 points, while Abby Haley had 16. Saxony Lutheran (19-8) will advance to the Class 3 State Quarterfinals to take on St. Pius X.
