Heritage Tourism adds another mural to square

Perry County Heritage Tourism is continuing its effort to tell the story of Perryville.
The organization has commissioned another mural, this one on the side of the Johnson and Niswonger building will highlight the history of Perry County.
Heritage Tourism Director Trish Erzfeld felt like that particular location will serve the community well.
“It’s a large wall that would take paint, meaning that it didn’t need any repairs,” Erzfeld said. “It’s right in the heart of the city, so that people coming and going to the square will see it.”
The mural itself will be completed by Kenzie Wolk, from just outside of St. Louis. It will feature patriotic themed scenes which will include historic views of the courthouse and past uses of this particular building.

“We work with each one of our building owners to see what design they have in mind,” Erzfeld. “Stephanie and Dominic [Stark] said they wanted to bring that corner back to life from past years. We have a courthouse and the American Flag which shows our patriotism in Perryville. The mural will also have a GTO in it to pay homage to the Cruise-Ins that we have each year. Then they will have the Pevely ice cream shop, which was called the Pevely Café that was once there. They wanted to take everything back to that time, so that you could see how far we’ve come.”
Wolk is known for her spray paint art, but this one will be a little different.
“There are some small details in the mural so much of it will be hand-painted, but I may try to get some spray paint in there,” Wolk said.
This will be the fourth mural that Heritage Tourism will be in charge of and Erzfeld enjoys murals because of the good representation of Perryville.
“I like the murals because they tell our story,” she said. “Each individual mural tells a different part of our history and culture that makes up Perryville. They are all different in their own way, but they describe Perryville.
Wolk will be finishing the mural into next week, weather permitting.
