Board puts sidewalk work on hold

The Perryville board of Aldermen has set a deadline of sorts when it comes to the sidewalks on North Moulton Street.
Steve Keller came before the board about the subject during the Sept. 20 board meeting and noted that he talked with 10 residents that live on the street and received nine “no’s” as it pertains to the project to add sidewalks to that particular street.
Several other residents on Moulton Street spoke against the sidewalk as well.
After a lengthy discussion, Perryville City Administrator Brent Buerck saw three options: continuing with the sidewalk plan as expected, not doing the sidewalks at all, or the board waits so that residents can submit a letter for reference for future occupants.
The board opted to delay approving the contract with Lappe Cement for the street project, and it was moved to the latest meeting on Oct. 4.
“[Perryville City Engineer Tim Baer] was able to speak with some of the people who have spoken at meetings in the past and a majority of those people where agreeable once they understood where the sidewalks were going to go and how it was going to be installed,” Buerck said. “Once their questions were answered, people were generally supportive.”
Baer noted that of the 21 residents on North Moulton Street, he talked with 16 of them.
“I had three or four no’s, a few that were indifferent, and a few yes,” Baer said.
The Perryville sidewalk committee’s suggestion was to send another letter asking people if they wanted the sidewalk on North Moulton. At the time of the meeting, the city has only received one such letter. It was decided that even those resident’s who said “no” to Baer should still send in a letter to the board.

“This letter will send a reminder that if any person has objections to the sidewalk that they should submit a letter in writing to the board so that we have something for the file for future reference,” Buerck said. “That would be who they are, where they live, and what their objection is.”
The deadline to receive any such letter will be October 28.
“If we get any other letters we will present it to the board and they will discuss it and we will proceed accordingly,” Buerck said. “
In other news, the board approved payments for the new fire station that is under construction along Perryville Blvd. and the new projector in the Perry Park Center theatre. Park Center staff is pleased with the quality of the new projector.
The board also approved a lighting study to be completed by the Perryville Police for streetlights along Mid America Street.
Economic Development Executive Director Crystal Jones noted that the Downtown Perryville Revitalization has changed its name to Downtown Perryville Advancement to establish 501c3 status.
“We feel like advancement is more what the group is focused on these days,” Jones said.
In his report, Buerck discussed positive reviews for the Route Optimization tool that helps with tree limb pickup and mentioned the Fall Clean Up is scheduled for the week of Oct. 17.
The next meeting is scheduled for Oct. 18.
