SV girls hang on to beat Fredericktown

The St. Vincent girls basketball team had played five games up to its matchup with Fredericktown on Dec. 8, all five of them the Indians won by double digits.
That was not the case against the Blackcats.
In what is the closest contest so far this season, St. Vincent edged Fredericktown 50-46.
Allie Patrick led the way with 18 points, while Haley Emmendorfer had 13 points in the game.
Lana Adams chipped in eight points, while Cailyn Prost had five and Mallory Patrick added four points.
However, it was Emmendorfer who jump-started the Indians offense scoring all 11 points in the first quarter as the game was tied 11-11 after the first quarter and 25-25 at the halftime break. Emmendorfer hit a trio of three-pointers in the first quarter alone.
“Haley was on fire and her teammates found her,” St. Vincent coach Mel Kirn said. “They knew who had the hot hand and kept feeding her the ball and she kept shooting them.”
St. Vincent outscored Fredericktown 10-6 in the third quarter, which proved to be the difference in the contest as both teams scored 15 points apiece in the fourth.

The Indians were down six points in the fourth quarter but came away with multiple steals to close down the deficit.
Allie Patrick sealed the game with a three-pointer with one minute left in regulation to put St. Vincent up by six points.
St. Vincent was 13 for 18 from the free throw line, while Fredericktown was 8 for 17.
“It was a very physical game and you have to be ready to play when you go to Fredericktown,” Kirn said.
Kirn felt like his team handled the anxiety of a close game well, despite not being in that situation yet this season.
“We got shook up a little bit on the press,” Kirn said. “We took a timeout and went over a couple things and adjusted. This group adapted very well and played calm basketball the rest of the way. It’s going to take a lot to fully shake this team, because they have played so many games together and play together so well.”

Holiday Tournament

St. Vincent is seeded second in the Delta New Year’s Tournament, which will be held Jan. 2-5. The Indians are seeded behind the host Bobcats (5-0) and in front of third seed Meadow Heights.
