St. Vincent brought home the top overall honor — the Semoball Cup — for the first time in school history earlier this month at the 12th annual Semoball Awards hosted at La Croix Church in Cape Girardeau.
The Indians did so by recording the most points out of the 56 schools in Semoball’s coverage area with a final score of 136.4, which is a total based off of a calculation of team-by-team postseason success and winning percentages.
Overall, this past school year, St. Vincent athletics captured three state plaques, two individual state championships, made six top-six state finishes and won seven district titles.
The Indians are now the eighth school to ever win the Semoball Cup, joining the likes of previous award winners Advance, Hayti, Jackson, Kennett, Malden, Notre Dame and Woodland. The Semoball Cup — unlike the individual honors at the Semoball Awards that are voted on by staff members — is an award that is earned and recognizes what was perhaps the greatest school year in St. Vincent sports’ history.
Two Indian teams reached the pinnacle of high school sports as both the St. Vincent girls basketball and girls soccer teams played for a state championship. While neither team captured a state title, both programs return a bevy of talent for the 2025- 26 school year.
Winning the only individual Semoball Award for the Indians was senior Lana Adams, who was named the Semoball Girls Soccer Athlete of the Year after earning Class 2 Co-Offensive Player of the Year honors following her junior year this spring. With the award, Adams individually made school history by becoming the first St. Vincent female athlete to ever win a Semoball Award. Indians 2025 graduate
Abigail Schilling was a fellow nominee for the award, as she was also a Class 2 All-State pick. Adams and Schilling led St. Vincent girls soccer to its third-ever second-place finish at state as the Indians posted a final overall record of 21-4 for an 84 percent winning percentage.
Unsurprisingly, St. Vincent’s girls basketball team was the only program in southeast Missouri with multiple nominees for the Semoball Girls Basketball Athlete of the Year award after a season where the Indians made the state final four for the first time in school history.
The two basketball players nominated for St. Vincent were the Rubel twins, seniors Brie Rubel and Kate Rubel, who both earned Class 2 All-State honors after they guided the Indians to their first state championship game as juniors this winter.
St. Vincent girls basketball also produced the best winning percentage for Indians female athletics at 87.1 percent with a record of 27-4.
Additionally, the Rubel sisters fielded other Semoball Award nominations for their outstanding junior campaigns as Kate Rubel was one of five finalists for the top individual honor in Semoball Female Athlete of the Year as she was also a Class 2 All-State selection in volleyball.
On top of being one of the 10 basketball nominees, Brie Rubel earned a nomination for the Semoball Girls Volleyball Athlete of the Year award as well after being named all-state with Kate following the fall.
With their teammates, the Rubel twins helped lead St. Vincent volleyball to reach the state final four for the first time in a decade as the Indians placed third overall, finishing with a record of 23- 9-5 (62.2 percent).
The fourth and final program to reach a state semifinal for the Indians this past school year was the St. Vincent football team, which went undefeated until that contest, finishing with an overall record of 11-1 and recording the top winning percentage of 92.3 percent.
Between Semoball’s two football awards of offensive and defensive athlete of the year, the Indians had three nominations as 2025 graduates Nick Buchheit, John Schwartz, and senior Carson House were each selected.
Buchheit was the only nomination for the offensive award after being named Class 1 Second Team All-State as a quarterback, while House and Schwartz were both defensive nominations for the Semoball Awards.
After the fall, Schwartz was a first-team all-state wide receiver, as House earned second-team all-state at linebacker. The other two St. Vincent athletic programs to finish in the top six at state were the Indians girls track and field team and boys golf team.
St. Vincent girls track was led by none other than Semoball Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year nominee senior Reagan Meyer, who became a four-time individual state champion as a junior this spring.
Meyer had won two state titles her sophomore year and followed that up by repeating as the state champ in both the 800 and 1,600-meter runs. She also earned all-state honors as a member of the 1,600 and 3,200-meter relay teams.
As a team, Indians girls track and field took sixth place in Class 1 with 27 points and won the Class 2 District 1 Championship.
Meyer was also a Semoball Girls Cross Country Athlete of the Year nominee after a Class 1 All-State finish (23rd place) this fall. Thanks to Meyer and the Rubel twins, St. Vincent was the only school to have three athletes nominated for multiple Semoball Awards for the 2024-25 school year.
Lastly, while the St. Vincent golf team had no Semoball nominations, the Indians placed sixth overall in Class 2 as they produced an overall score of 691 through two days and also claimed a district title this spring.
At state, St. Vincent senior Sam Koishor ended up in second place individually and finished three strokes behind the Class 2 State Champion to cap off his junior campaign. Even though he was the only Indians golfer to earn all-state this year and recorded one of the highest state finishes in southeast Missouri, Koishor wasn’t named as one of the five Semoball Boys Golf Athlete of the Year nominees.
The 12th and final Semoball Awards nominee for St. Vincent athletics was junior Carter Hennemann, who was a finalist for Semoball Boys Cross Country Athlete of the Year. Hennemann nearly placed in the top 10 at the Class 2 State Meet, where he took 11th overall.
Fall sports will officially begin at the end of next month, starting with an away game for the football team on Aug. 29, while the volleyball and cross country teams will start their regular seasons the following day on the road as well.
