STE. GENEVIEVE — “This game will not define our season.”
Those were the words of St. Vincent Indians head coach Tim Schumer following the team’s first loss of the season Friday night against Valle Catholic.
The Indians fell 48-0 to the perennial favorite Warriors. Touchdowns were scored both on the ground and through the air, but the Warriors were led by running back Evan Fallert, who ran for 155-yards.
Not much offense came from the Indians, who spent most of the game deep in their own territory struggling to gain field position, and being forced to punt on most of their drives.
Schumer said despite the loss, the team is still holding their heads high. He said that he knew Valle Catholic would be a big test and that he wants to see his team learn from the loss.
“It was a very good opponent that we played this week,” Schumer said. “It shows on the field, they are who they are because of the work they put in. It was a good measuring stick for us, we know that we have a lot of work we have to do. Our response to this game will define our season, we are going to put one foot in front of the other and keep going forward.”
Four games remain for the Indians before the state tournament begins, with St. Vincent currently on track to finish first in the district, Schumer said the loss to Valle shows them where they need to be come October.
“They are one of the premier programs in the state, they’re going to be good year in, year out, and ultimately that’s the level you want to get at,” he said. “We are in the same class and different districts, so if we are able to get through districts we will probably see them again but that’s a long way from now and we’ve got to take it one week at a time. We have four regular season conference games the next four weeks so we’ve gotta focus on those and then we’ll focus on districts after that.”
St. Vincent returns for senior night in Perryville this Friday night, they will host Bayless with Hancock. Kickoff against the Bronchos is scheduled for 7 p.m.
