St. Vincent rolls over Notre Dame

CAPE GIRARDEAU — After a slow start, St. Vincent found its rhythm and rolled to an 8-2 victory over Notre Dame on April 14.

The Lady Indians improved to 11-1 on the season, using a balanced offensive effort and a strong second-half surge to pull away.

St. Vincent led just 6-1 at halftime, but took full control after the break, adding 2 more goals while continuing to create consistent scoring chances.

“It was good. Definitely a slow start for us,” St. Vincent coach Cari Barnes said. “I don’t know why, but we just started really, really slow. But once we kind of got into our groove, we started playing our game, and things started falling into place a little bit better.”

Sadie Cissell and Morgan Schnurbusch each scored 2 goals to lead the offensive charge. Cissell opened the scoring off an assist from Grace Jenneman, then added a second goal later in the half off a pass from Lana Adams. Schnurbusch followed with 2 goals of her own, one assisted by Adams and another set up by Cissell, as the Lady Indians began to find their flow in the attacking third.

“Those girls have been working really hard, so for them to be able to finish, I was super proud of them,” Barnes said.

Adams continued her standout season with a hat trick, scoring twice in the first half — including one unassisted — before adding another goal in the second half off an assist from Jenneman.

Aubrey Emmendorfer also contributed with an assist on one of Adams’ goals, while Rylee Robinson added an unassisted score to round out the St. Vincent scoring.

In all, 5 different players scored for the Lady Indians, with multiple players also contributing assists as the offense operated efficiently throughout the match.

Barnes pointed to the team’s ability to share the ball and generate scoring opportunities across the lineup as a key takeaway.

“I just thought that as a whole, our whole team played well,” she said. “We got some goals from some girls that have just been working really hard.”

Defensively, St. Vincent remained steady after conceding early, with goalkeeper Chloe House anchoring the back line.

The Lady Indians have now outscored opponents by a wide margin this season, continuing to show both offensive firepower and depth.

Barnes also noted that the team is navigating some midseason injuries, making the upcoming break in the schedule a welcome opportunity.

“We’ve got some midseason kind of injuries tweaking up here and there,” she said. “So I’m hopeful that this week off will be good for our bodies to rest up and heal a little bit.”

With a full week between games, St. Vincent will look to recover and build on its strong start.

“We’re 11-1 right now,” Barnes said. “Super proud of the girls. We have a really good group as a whole, and they’re just meshing really well right now. I think we’ve got a good thing going.”
