Chaffee led 19-9 at halftime. The Red Devils held Saxony to just two free throws in the quarter and sank a few threes to extend their lead.

This was quite a change from when the Red Devils went up against Perryville on Feb. 18, when the ball bounced from one end of the court to the other every few seconds. Saxony Lutheran did well defensively and played disciplined on offense against the Chaffee team.

In the third quarter, Saxony got close to the Red Devils several times, squeezing Chaffee’s lead down to six points, but the Crusaders were tripped up by fouls, putting the Red Devils on the line. Chaffee maintained a nine-point lead of 27-18 in the third quarter despite Saxony making a play for the lead early in the third but fell victim to the Red Devils making good plays under pressure that allowed them to hold onto their lead and win the game.

Following Saxony Lutheran’s loss against Chaffee, the Crusaders went up against Oak Ridge the following night, winning the game 62-40, but ultimately lost 48-58 against Greenville in the Class 3 District 2 Tournament on Monday, Feb. 24.
