Perryville High School had a number of fall sport athletes that earned postseason honors, with the Indians’ boys soccer team — which finished third in the Missouri State High School Activities Association’s Class 2 championships — leading the way.
Senior Kade Baundendtistel, who earned first-team all-state honors along with teammate Treyton Barnett, also earned first-team all-region recognition and was named the All-Region Defensive Player of the Year. Meanwhile, Barnett, who finished the season as the Pirates’ leading scorer with 32 goals and 16 assists, was named the Jefferson County Athletic Association’s Conference Player of the Year.
“I think that both were very deserving of that,” said Perryville soccer coach Jerry Fulton. “Any time your players get that kind of honor, it’s always a great thing for the program.”
Goalkeeper Waylon Huber earned second-team all-state honors, and Karston Schilli was named an honorable mention. Both also earned all-region honors.
At the district level, Barnett, Baundendistel, Schilli, Huber, and Dez Hampson earned first-team honors, while Ethan Pohlman, Vincent Schaaf, Dexter Strattman, and Aiden Wendel were named to the second team.
At the conference level, Baundendistel, Treyton Barnett, and Huber were named to the first team, while Hampson, Schaaf, Schilli, and Strattman were named to the second team. Aiden Wendel was named an honorable mention.
In the classroom, Strattman and Schaaf earned academic all-state honors.
Fulton said that, despite the long list of honors, there were several others he felt deserved recognition.
“Because there are so many upperclassmen, guys like Ethan Pohlman, who was crucial to this team all year and a guy like Oliver Tucker, who came in hard at the end to help us, they kind of get overlooked because of there being underclassmen with so many seniors, but I think all those guys were crucial to this team.”
The Pirates also earned a number of honors on the football field.
At the district level, tight end Drew Leuckel, running back Barrett Wheeler, and offensive lineman Derek Martin were named to the first team, while defensive lineman Cabren Kirn and defensive back Dawson Wolk were named to the second team. Leuckel, who also played defense, was honored as a second- team defensive end.
At the conference level, Wheeler — who rushed for 1,477 yards on 193 carries and scored a team-high 26 touchdowns on the season — was named the Offensive Player of the Year.
He was joined on the all-conference first team by Martin at guard, Leuckel at tight end, defensive end, and kicker, Kirn at defensive line, Adrian Mendoza at outside linebacker, and Wolk at defensive back.
Earning second team honors were Alex Hayden at guard, Ben Huber at tackle, Xzyavier Wilson at wide receiver, Kayd Luckey at quarterback and Sergio Mendoza at defensive line.
Center Wesley Pfaff and inside linebacker Korbin Rollet were honorable mentions, as were Luckey at punter and Wilson at returner.
Wheeler, Pfaff and Hayden were named Academic All-Staters.
In cross country, state qualifier Clayton Bauwens earned both all-district and all-conference honors.
Ava Robles led a list of Lady Pirates who earned postseason honors on the softball field, earning second team all-region, first team all-district and first team all-conference honors. Teammates Lilly Cowell and Madeleine Gremaud were named second-team all-district and all-conference honorable mentions.
In volleyball, Emma Blechle was named first-team all-district and was an all-conference honorable mention, while Lexi Schemel, Allyson Burns, and Kaeli Klaus earned second-team honors. Paige Berkbigler was an honorable mention.
At the conference level, Schemel was named to the second team.
