Perryville earns split in river rivalry series

CHESTER — A healthy dose of hitting from the bottom of the lineup helped the Perryville Pirates (9-7) post a 4-3 victory on May 10, leaving them 1-1 in their two-game, home-and-home series with the Chester Yellowjackets.

Perryville lost to Chester 7-6 a day earlier at home before they traveled across the Mississippi River for the second game.

In the victory, Evan Hayden, Eli Hemingway, and Bryce Weber combined for 5 of the team’s 9 hits, scored 4 runs and drove in 1. Perryville jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning on Hemingway’s RBI single and Ty Peeler 2-run double.

Waylon Huber earned the win for Perryville on the mound, giving up 3 runs on 6 hits in 5 innings of work, striking out 3 and walking 4. Bryce Weber collected the save after 2 innings of relief. He gave up 1 hit, struck out 2 and walked 2. Ethan Colvis took the loss for Chester after 4 2/3 innings. He gave up 4 runs on 9 hits, striking out 5 and walking. Peeler led Perryville at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with 2 RBI. Hemingway was 2-for-3 with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored, while Weber finished 2-for- 3 with 1 run scored. Hayden was 1-for-3 with 1 run scored.

For Chester, Kolton Jany was 2-for-2 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored. In the May 9 opener, Peeler and Huber had 2 hits each as the Pirates outhit the Yellowjackets 8-7 in the loss. Jany had the big bat for Chester, landing an RBI triple to center field in the first inning, then scoring on Brenden Malley’s single to give the Yellowjackets a 2-0 lead. Malley finished 2-for-4 with 4 RBI.

For Perryville, Peeler and Huber each had 2 hits and 1 RBI. Troy O’keefe took the loss for the Pirates, giving up 7 runs, 5 earned, on 7 hits, striking out 9 and walking 4 in 4 1/3 innings.
