Lady Pirates lose ‘squeaker’ against Meadow Heights

The Lady Pirates played a challenging game, but in the end, they couldn’t stop the Meadow Heights girls' basketball team from scoring a 49-47 win when the teams played Thursday, Feb. 13, in Patton.

With the score tied at 44 points and only 1:22 left on the clock, Meadow Heights took a timeout and returned to the court with renewed energy for the win.

Zoe Hoehn scored 17 points for the Pirates, and Madeline Gremaud put eight points on the board, including two of the Lady Pirates’ three 3-pointers. Perryville’s leading scorer, Aby Amberger, was held to just four field goals and 12 points.

Meadow Heights led Perryville 12-9 after the opening quarter and increased its lead to 15-9 early in the second. Perryville came back with an 8-0 run and took a 17-15 lead around two minutes before halftime.

The Panthers closed the quarter on a 5-0 run, with three free throws and a field goal.

Perryville started the third quarter with an 8-0 run, moving into the lead 25-20. However, the Lady Pirates were stopped in their tracks with a 3-pointer from Meadow Heights, a pair of field goals, and a converted three-point play, making it a 31-29 game with Meadow Heights in the lead. A field goal with 12 seconds left in the game left the two teams tied at 33 heading into the final quarter.

The Pirates’ Zoe Hoehn converted a pair of free throws with 1:30 left on the clock, giving Perryville a 44-43 lead, but eight seconds later, Anna Yamnitz split a pair of foul shots, tying the game at 44.

Perryville had an opportunity to take the lead, but the Panthers grabbed a defensive rebound and scored with one minute left in the game, and Meadow Heights in the lead 46-44. Thirty seconds later, Meadow Heights made a field goal and moved back into the lead 48-44.

Following a blocked shot by the Panthers, Hoehn corralled an offensive rebound and sank a 3-pointer (48-47) with 15 seconds left on the scoreboard. Meadow Heights was fouled and made 1-of-2 shots at the line, leaving the Panthers in the lead 49-47 with only 8.2 seconds left on the scoreboard.
The Lady Pirates allowed a turnover on the subsequent inbounds play, but after the steal, Meadow Heights gave Perryville one more chance to retake the lead when it had an over-and-back violation with two seconds left in the game.

The Lady Indians’ inbounds pass went to Kara Long, but Perryville failed to score, giving the Panthers the win.
