DELTA — Senior forward Kate Rubel scored 24 points to lead the St. Vincent Lady Indians to their third consecutive victory, topping Portageville 60-47 at the Delta Shootout on Jan. 10.

“They had a quick little team, but our girls came out right off the bat,” said St. Vincent coach Mel Kirn. “In the first quarter, we were winning 17-2, and we kept a double-digit lead the whole game. We really played very well together.”

Portagville (13-3) managed to outscore St. Vincent 11-9 in the second quarter, but still trailed 26-13 at the half.

“In the second half, they were scoring on us a little bit more because we were switching some girls around and trying some different positions and stuff for girls to get a little playing time,” Kirn said. “Portageville had a very good team, and our girls stepped up to the challenge. I was very proud of the way they did it.”

Senior guard Brie Rubel finished with 17 points and 10 assists, while senior guard Lana Adams had 9 points and 10 rebounds.

In all, six Lady Indians scored as St. Vincent shot 51 percent from the field — including 6-of-16 three-point attempts — and 57.1 percent from the free-throw line.

“Our girls are doing pretty good,” Kirn said. “I’m pleased with the way we’re moving forward. Every game, I can see improvement in all of them. They’re starting to jell together pretty good and they all get along good together. It’s going very, very well.”

ST. VINCENT 71, WOODLAND 37

WOODLAND — Senior forward Kate Rubel scored a game-high 33 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field — including 3-of-7 three-point attempts — and 10-of-17 free-throw shooting to lead the St. Vincent Lady Indians in a rout over host Woodland on Jan. 8.

According to St. Vincent coach Mel Kirn, the Lady Cardinals (5-7) were a bit under the weather.

“They had three or four girls sick for Woodland,” Kirn said. “Then they called us yesterday morning and told us the girls come to school. We didn’t know what to expect when we got there, but I know [Woodland coach Paul Lynch] does a good job with his girls and they’re always going to be ready to go against you.”

With that in mind, Kirn said his girls were ready to go from the jump, taking a 32-11 lead by halftime.

“We just started rolling from there,” Kirn said. “At halftime, we said to the girls, ‘We’ve just got to keep playing our game and look for people. We had 18 assists, and that’s awesome. I couldn’t be more proud of this team. They don’t care who scores just as long as we can get it in the rim.”

Senior guard Lana Adams had 17 points for St. Vincent, the only other Lady Indian to score more than 10 points, although seven put points on the board.

ST. VINCENT 67, DELTA 37

St. Vincent senior Brie Rubel scored 17 points to lead the Lady Indians to a 30-point victory over visiting Delta on Jan. 5.

“We played very well,” said St. Vincent coach Mel Kirn. “Delta’s got a really scrappy team. We came out, and we just played some really good defense and made them turn the ball over a lot. Our girls ran the offense very well that night, played some tough defense.”

Three other Lady Indians reached double digits, as seniors Kate Rubel and Rylee Robinson finished with 12 points each, and junior Paige Leible finished with 11 points off the bench.

Kirn said getting so many points off the bench was a huge help for his team.

“We had 17 points off the bench,” Kirn said. “That really helped us a lot. It takes the pressure off the starters a little bit that way, so they don’t have to press and try to carry the whole team by themselves. That was a blessing."
