Two big innings for Windsor — and a few mistakes from the home team — proved to be enough to boost the Lady Owls (4-2) to an 11-1 victory over the host Perryville Lady Pirates (0-4) on Thursday, but Perryville coach Jim Simpson said he really wasn’t that disappointed.
“It’s another story of being young,” Simpson said. “First inning, we gave up a couple walks. We made a couple errors. They scored four on us. We settled down in the second inning and gave up one run. And actually, we’re looking pretty good. And then the third inning, couple walks, couple errors, again, being young, inexperienced. We give up five, but once the third inning was over, we settled down and we really finished the game strong.”
Windsor opened the scoring in the top of the first after Gracie Wiltrout singled to third, sending Sophia Stemmler across, then scored after tagging up on a fly to short. Ella Montgomery hit an RBI single to left field, and Ty Schenck scored on an error to take a 4-0 lead. Windsor added another run in the second on a dropped third strike, then scored 5 more on 3 hits in the top of the third.
Stemmler and Schenck each drew a walk, scoring 1 run, and Natalie Krause hit a 3-RBI double to make it 10-0. Perryville’s only run came in the third when junior catcher Madeleine Gremaud hit a line-drive single to center field, allowing Madyson Richardet to score. Windsor added a run in the fifth when Schenck hit a solo home run to right field.
Simpson said his team showed great improvement at the plate, cutting their strikeouts in half and making more contact.
“That’s definitely a good thing,” Simpson said. And the other positive thing offensively is we were making adjustments in the box. I was watching the girls. If they were late, they were moving back in the box. They were choking up on two strikes. So those are things that we weren’t doing before that’s definitely going to help us out in the future.
“Most of our strikeouts in the first two games were looking. We were probably in double digits both games. We had one strikeout looking — 6 total today. We cut them in half and if we’re swinging a bat, that gives us a lot more opportunity to make contact and improve there.”
Simpson highlighted Gremaud’s performance, both at the plate and behind it, along with the rest of the Lady Pirates at the top of the lineup.
“Madeleine Gremaud, our catcher, that kid — she was in our number two hole today — she’s still continuing to hit the ball hard,” Simpson said. “And then defensively, she’s throwing runners out, she’s posing, she’s sticking better, more aggressively. [Robles] hit the ball hard again, she didn’t have as much to show for it. The top three hitters in our lineup with Lilly Cowell are really starting to hit the ball hard consistently and put the ball in play.”
Gremaud finished 1-for-2 at the plate with 1 RBI. Richardet was 1-for-2 with 1 run scored. For Windsor, Krause went 1-for-4 with 5 RBI, and Wiltrout was 2-for-4. Cowell took the loss in the circle for Perryville, giving up 7 hits and 11 runs —six earned — in 5 innings, striking out 7 and walking 6. Anna Holland earned the win for Windsor, giving up 2 hits and 1 run in 5 innings, striking out 6 and walking 2.

DESOTO 8, PERRYVILLE 4
FREDERICKTOWN — Perryville’s Ava Robles finished 3-for-4 at the plate — including a double and a home run — with 1 RBI and 3 runs scored, but it wasn’t enough to prevent an 8-4 loss to the DeSoto Lady Dragons on Saturday in their opening game at the Fredericktown Softball Tournament. Perryville opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning after a double from Madeleine Gremaud sent Robles across, then Gremaud scored after tagging up on a fly ball to right field. DeSoto tied the game in the top of the third, and a single from Gremaud put Perryville back on top, 3-2. DeSoto regained the lead in the fifth, but Robles’ home run to center left the game tied 4-4. DeSoto scored 4 runs in the seventh to secure the victory. Lilly Cowell took the loss in the circle for Perryville after giving up 7 runs — 3 earned — on 7 hits, striking out 5 and walking 3 in 7 innings. Gremaud finished 2-for-2 at the plate and led the team with 2 RBI.
