1986 girls state champions honored

For a few minutes last Thursday night, the scoreboard went dark, the game paused, and time rolled back four decades.

Standing at midcourt just before Perryville’s girls varsity basketball game against Valle Catholic, members of the 1986 Perryville Lady Pirates were welcomed back — not just as former players, but as champions whose legacy still defines the program today

The ceremony honored the 1986 team that captured the Missouri state championship, the first and only girls basketball state title in school history, and recognized the broader era of excellence from 1983 through 1992 that established Perryville as one of the state’s premier programs.

“Tonight, we pause to honor a team — and an era — that holds a permanent place in Perryville High School history,” the public address announcer said as the players stood together once again on the same court where the current Lady Pirates now compete.

The 1986 championship season remains one of the proudest accomplishments in school history. That team reached the pinnacle of Missouri high school basketball through what was described as hard work, discipline and an unshakable belief in one another.

But their story was part of something bigger.

The foundation for the championship was laid years earlier. Perryville announced itself as a statewide contender with a third-place finish in 1983, followed by a second- place finish in 1984. After winning the state title in 1986, the Lady Pirates continued their success with another second-place finish in 1987, a fourth-place finish in 1991 and a runner-up finish in 1992.

From 1983 through 1992, Perryville built a culture defined by toughness, consistency and pride — one that still shapes the program today.

The 1986 team’s championship run itself was filled with memorable moments. Perryville opened the postseason with a 55-39 district win over Park Hills Central, followed with a 61-46 sectional victory over Charleston and a 70-31 quarterfinal win over Nernix Hall. The Lady Pirates then defeated Troy 44-33 in the semifinals before capturing the state title with a 34-30 victory over Kearney in the championship game.

As each name was read — Karen Aurich, Gina Berkbuegler, Michelle Horneker, Lisa Kaempfe, Jennifer Pautler, Denise Cattoor, Jenni France, Jennifer Grebing, Vicki Moldenhauer, Mary Jo Rollet, Junelle Brewer, Karen Hudson, Penny Mueller and Diane Petzoldt — the crowd responded with applause.

Head coach Steve Wunderlich and assistant coach Greg Roman, who guided the team throughout its historic run, were also recognized, along with managers Michelle Blechle, Carla Wills, and Jennifer Garris.

Some smiled. Others waved. All were clearly moved.

Their legacy, the announcer said, lives on not only in banners and trophies, but in the pride and competitive spirit passed down to every Lady Pirate who has followed.

That legacy was visible moments later, when the current Perryville team returned to the floor wearing the same uniform and carrying the same expectations. The game resumed. The clock restarted.

But for one night, the focus wasn’t just on the present — it was on honoring the team that helped build it.
