SV boys use fast start to cruise by Crystal City

If the St. Vincent boys were looking to go on a run this season and improve their record immensely, it certainly looks like they are on the right track.
The Indians jumped all over Crystal City in the opening minutes and used that momentum to cruise to a 67-29 victory on Friday.
“I can start to see that we are making strides out there both individually and as a team,” St. Vincent coach Bruce Valleroy said. “It started with our defense and we established that right off the bat and were able to turn turnovers into baskets on the other end. On offense we did what we needed to do and scored 67 points in three quarters, which is pretty good.”
That offensive output began from the opening tip with a three-pointer from Max Wheeler and continued from there.
Jacob Schremp scored a conventional three-point play and Colden Prost made a three-pointer of his own to put the Indians ahead 17-5 with two minutes remaining in the opening quarter.
St. Vincent led 23-9 after that first quarter and it continued into the second with a three from Wyatt Winkler and a steal and basketball on the other end to go ahead 34-14. A put back at the halftime buzzer had St. Vincent up 45-18 through two quarters.

“The guys came out and executed at both ends and that’s what you’re looking for when you play conference, and now district opponents,” Valleroy said.
Wheeler led the way for the Indians with 20 points, while Jacob Schremp and Colden Prost each had 12 . Parker Ellis and Wyatt Winkler at 11 and 10 points respectively.
Valleroy was happy to see five players in double figures for the game.
“Anytime you get that many in double figures that means you have to guard everybody,” Valleroy said. “That’s the way we want to play is to have balanced scoring across the board.”
For Crystal City Kanden Bolton, who averages 20 points per game, was held to eight points in the game.
The game was the first JCAA Conference game for the Indians who stand at 1-0, the same as St. Pius, who beat Crystal City earlier in the week.
“We don’t want to give that up,” Valleroy said. “We want to keep winning and see if we can capture that conference championship. This is the first step in that direction.”
