St. Vincent steamrolls winless Grandview on the road

HILLSBORO — St. Vincent (2-2) scored nine runs in the second inning Friday defeat the Grandview Eagles (0-2) 17-1 on March 28.

In the top of the second, Nick Buchheit had an RBI single, Jacob Seabaugh sent two across, Avery Brown drew a bases-loaded walk, Gus Unterreiner had a two- RBI doubled, Connor Roth had an RBI single, and Eli Abernathy hit a sacrifice fly. The ninth run came on an error.

St. Vincent’s scoring frenzy actually began in the top of the first after Gavin Hotop hit a two-RBI double. A wild pitch allowed another run to score, followed by an error that allowed two more. Gus Unterreiner had an RBI single that gave the Indians a 6-0 lead.

Tyler Hennemann started on the mound for St. Vincent and gave no runs and no hits in one inning, striking out 2 and walking 1.

Reliever Levi Schilling pitched three innings and gave up 1 run and 1 hit, striking out 6 and walking.

St. Vincent batters collected 11 hits, led by Unterreiner, who finished 2-for-3 with 3 RBI. Hotop also finished with 2 hits. In addition, Cain Clifton and Avery Brown each drew 2 of 10 walks for the Indians, while Andrew Schumer and Clifton each stole 2 bases for St. Vincent, which finished with a total of 7.

SAXONY LUTHERAN 6, LEOPOLD 2

LEOPOLD — Rightfielder Kai McDowell finished with 1-for-4 at the plate with 2 RBI to lead Saxony Lutheran (3-2) to a 6-2 road victory over Leopold (1-3) on March 28.

McDowell, hitting eighth in the order, hit a line-drive single in the fourth, allowing James Hope and Korby Engert to score as the Crusaders took a 2-0 lead.

Engert grounded into a fielder’s choice in the top of the fifth, and Zach Roth scored, opening the gap to 3-0, then added another run moments later after stealing second and scoring on the throw after Seth Stageberg’s single to short.

Leopold got on the board in the bottom of the sixth, but Brayden Moore and Stageberg scored on errors in the seventh to make it 6-1. Leopold’s final run came in the seventh on an RBI double.

Hope earned the win for Saxony, giving up two runs, 1 earned, on 3 hits in seven innings, with 7 strikeouts and 2 walks.

STE GENEVIEVE 3, PERRYVILLE 2

STE. GENEVIEVE —Ste. Genevieve’s Justin Schweigert scored in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie, and the Dragons (4-1) held on to beat Perryville 3-2 on March 27.

Ste. Genevieve took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single from Schweigert.

The Pirates evened the score in the third on an RBI double from starting pitcher Troy O’Keefe that sent Ty Peeler across.

Perryille took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth after Waylon Huber drew a bases-loaded walk, allowing Hunter Esselman to score.

On the mound, O’Keefe gave up 3 runs on 6 hits in 6 innings, striking out 4 and walking 3.

Ste. Genevieve’s Noah Willett gave 5 hits and 2 runs over 4 innings, striking out 2 and walking 3.

At the plate for Perryville, Peeler, Huber, O’Keefe, Evan Hayden, and Eli Hemingway finished with one hit each.
