Shorthanded SV edges Fredericktown in OT

St. Vincent loves to play more than the required amount. Ok, maybe the coach doesn’t as much.
For the second straight game, overtime was required for the St. Vincent girls basketball team. However, in this one, St. Vincent came out with the victory.
The Indians scored the first four points in the extra period to edge Fredericktown 47-44 on Dec. 7 in the Indians’ home opener.
Already missing point guard Lana Adams, St. Vincent played Thursday without leading scorer Allie Patrick who injured her knee in the triple OT loss to Saxony Lutheran days earlier.
“Nobody quit tonight,” St. Vincent coach Mel Kirn said. “We played some freshmen tonight because with injuries and possible foul trouble, we are dressing everybody. I told the JV that I wasn’t sure how much they will get to play, but to be ready.”
As Kirn said nobody quit, St. Vincent struggled at times offensively, shooting just 28 percent from the field and 2-25 from three-point range (8 percent). That grit and determination was greatly needed.
St. Vincent was led by Rylee Robinson with 13 points, while Haley Emmendorfer and Mallory Patrick had 11 points. Caliyn Prost had seven points. Kirn had great reviews for all the players, but spoke much about Patrick’s play on the floor as she went 3-3 from the floor and 5-5 from the free throw line.
Mallory Patrick hit a pair of technical free throws and Prost followed that up with a three-point play to stretch the St. Vincent lead to 37-31 with five minutes left in regulation. Fredericktown stayed close throughout the rest of the final quarter, but St. Vincent stayed in front or tied the entire time.

After another pair of Patrick free throws, Fredericktown tied the game at 39 apeice with a three-pointer with 1:30 left.
After possessions by both teams and several attempted steals by Fredericktown on the Indians, Prost banked in a shot to give the Indians a two point lead with 15 seconds left.
Fredericktown’s Amelia Miller was fouled under the basket and sank her two free throws with four seconds left in regulation. Haley Emmendorfer missed a three on the final play of regulation.
“That just shows you how much time 4 seconds really is that we started from one end of the floor and got a really good shot,” Kirn said.
Patrick and Abigail Schilling started the overtime with baskets to go up 45-41 and the Indians hit just enough free throws at the end to stave off the Blackcats. Kirn praised the leadership of the Indians
“I know that people think of as a young teams, but we have a lot of leadership,” Kirn said “These girls really want to play together as a team and constantly talk with one another about things going on during games.”
St. Vincent (4-2) will take on Park Hills Central (2-1), who have won 20-plus games each of the past two seasons. Kirn expects his team to go into that game shorthanded as well.
“That will be a tough game,” he said. “When we made the schedule we thought that we would have everybody healthy. That’s the way these things go. We will go in and play hard and see what happens.”
