Pirates, Indians see first action in jamboree

There were certainly ups and downs for Perryville and St. Vincent volleyball in their first action of the season.
The Pirates and Indians competed in a four-team jamboree with Valle Catholic and Ste. Genevieve on Tuesday at St. Vincent High School.
Perryville coach Liz Meyr was using the event to get a final grasp of a few details.
“I was using it to finalize our lineup and see how we matched up against other teams,” she said. “We used three different rotations and I thought the girls did well, although I did see some things we need to work on before our first game.”
The Pirates did well as the night wore on beating St. Vincent in two of three sets. The second of which almost saw a furious comeback as St. Vincent staved off multiple set points before the Pirates won 15-13. The Indians won the final set 15-6 to cap off a long night of volleyball.

The Pirates lost 2 of three to Valle Catholic who looks primed to continue a long tradition of success.
“I thought we looked better in the summer when we were playing tournament after tournament,” Meyr said. “But I thought we did some good things out there.”
Each team played a total of nine sets to 15 points and St. Vincent coach Darren Verseman needed most of them to find something positive for his team.
St. Vincent won two of the nine sets that were played on Tuesday (one each over Perryville and Valle Catholic)
“You use these to find mistakes and try to correct them and I saw plenty tonight,” he said. “Thankfully, it happened now and we have the chance to fix them before the season starts.
Perryville plays in the Woodland Tournament on Aug. 28, while St. Vincent travels to Visitation Academy for a tournament this weekend.
