Perryville golf making positive strides this season

Perryville golf coach Justin Dreyer made no bones about it, at the beginning of the season his team was struggling.
“We started this year shooting around the lower 220s,” Dreyer said.
He contributed some of the higher scores at the beginning of the season to the fact that his team was inexperienced at the varsity golf level.
“We have juniors and seniors on the team, but a lot of them had not played much varsity golf,” Dreyer said. “As the season has gone on, I think the guys have settled into playing and shaved off about 25-30 strokes off our team scores and really improved. We are consistely shooting in the 190s now.”
That improvement continued on Monday as the Pirates defeeated DeSoto and Herculanuem in a tri-match.
Dreyer contributes the improvement to getting more consistent play from the players on the team, including Rilyand Graham.
“He’s been awesome lately,” Dreyer said. “He started out shooting mid to low 50s and now cut that down to low to mid 40s. He is definitely capable of shooting in the mid 40s and he’s come a long way.”

Ethan Blythe, who is in his first year of golf has also improved greatly.
“At the beginning of the season, he was shooting in the mid 50s and in his last three matches, he has been in the low 40s.”
Dreyer noted that Nate Moll and Ben Hotop have also lower their scores significantly.
He said that the team has been playing a smart brand of golf.
“I think we are keeping the ball in play a lot more,” he said. “I think we are playing smarter golf.”
With this improvement, Dreyer is hoping that the team can get a golfer or two out of the district tournament. The last Pirate golfer to do so was Drew Elder a few years ago.
“Without a doubt.” Dreyer said. “I think that Rilyand and Ethan have a real shot at getting out of districts,” Dreyer said. “The other guys have a chance as well, but they haven’t pieced together entire back-to-back rounds in the 40s, which is what it would take to get out of the district tournament. If they continue to work I think anyone on the team is capable of that.”
