Several local teams seemed primed to make deep postseason runs. That’s partly because they earned top seeds in their district tournaments.
Saxony Lutheran, St. Vincent, and Perryville each earned the top seed in their respective districts when the brackets were released.
Saxony Lutheran has seen a gradual improvement over the last two seasons, going from four wins in 2021 to eight in 2022 and now the Crusaders are 9-7. That is good enough for the Crusaders to earn the top seed in Class 1, District 1. Saxony will play the winner of Kelly and Hancock on May 17 at Kelly High School. The other schools in the district include Gateway Science Charter and Collegiate School of Med-Bio Science.
St. Vincent is the top seed in Class 3, District 1. The Indians will try to go one step farther this season after falling to Notre Dame-St. Louis in the district championship game last season. St. Vincent will take on Sikeston in the first round May 13 at 11 a.m. at Windsor High School.
Notre Dame-St. Louis is the second seed this season, as part of the eight-team bracket.
Other teams include: Windsor, Cape Central, Festus, Farmington, and Hillsboro.
Perryville is the number one seed in Class 2, District 1, hoping to have a deep postseason run like last season, when the Pirates finished fourth at state.
The Pirates claimed the top seed by virtue of defeating St. Pius 1-0 in overtime during the regular season. Perryville will be in the tournament with Affton, Bayless, Bishop DeBourg, DeSoto, Fredericktown, and North County.
