Letter to the Editor: Farmers – GOP’s next ox to gore

Posted

Dear Editor

Here are some of the liberal "welfare" giveaways Republicans oppose – banning price gouging, expanding access to affordable housing, boosting child tax credits, promoting access to education, expanding $35 insulin for all Americans, healthcare for all and paying care workers a living wage.

Listed among these liberal giveaways are the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), crop insurance subsidies, and commodity payouts. The Republican Study Committee (RSC) proposed the elimination of CRP. It wants to set crop insurance subsidy caps of $40,000.

Project 2025 says farmers should not be allowed to get commodity payments if they get crop insurance subsidies. This paves the way for hollowing out rural communities as family farms disappear and corporate farms get bigger.

Franklin D. Roosevelt realized this when he signed the "liberal giveaway" in 1933 called the Agricultural Adjustment Act that subsidized farming. We all need to understand that the GOP sees farmers as "welfare" recipients, too.
