St. Vincent used a late push and strong pitching to break a 5-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory over Meadow Heights on April 23 at Veterans Memorial Field in Perryville.
The Indians (6-9) scored twice in the sixth inning to erase a 3-2 deficit and secure a key win over a district opponent.
“We finally broke a losing streak there,” St. Vincent coach Corey Sauer said. “Both Cain Clifton and Levi Schilling threw the ball very well. Offensively, still the same old story with us. We’re hitting balls right at people again. But finally got a few to fall and caught a couple of breaks there.”
St. Vincent finished with 6 hits and capitalized on Meadow Heights miscues, while the Panthers committed 6 errors.
Andrew Hotop led the Indians at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, a run and a stolen base. Andrew Schumer added 2 hits, including 2 doubles, while driving in a run.
Quinton Whistler also delivered an RBI, and Gus Unterreiner added a hit and a run scored.
Meadow Heights totaled 3 hits but took advantage of 4 St. Vincent errors to stay in the game.
Kamden Hays led the Panthers, going 2-for-2 with a triple and 2 RBI. Mason Mayfield added a hit and a run, while Caiden Byrd also scored.
The Panthers took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning before St. Vincent chipped away.
The Indians scored single runs in the second and third innings to tie the game at 2-2, then Meadow Heights regained a 3-2 lead in the sixth.
St. Vincent answered immediately in the bottom half, plating 2 runs to take the lead for good.
Clifton started on the mound and went 5 innings, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 3 hits with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks.
Schilling earned the win in relief, tossing 2 scoreless innings while allowing no hits and striking out 3.
“Obviously, the Meadow Heights win was big because that is a district opponent,” Sauer said. “Our schedule is so darn tough that, you know, 6-9, yeah, or 3 games under .500. But if we can get some of these hits to fall and continue that hitting approach and continue the way we pitched the other day, I think we’ll be in good shape.”
Meadow Heights pitcher Kamden Hays took the loss despite a strong outing, allowing 4 runs (0 earned) on 6 hits over 6 1/3 innings while striking out 4.
St. Vincent continues to rely on a small-ball approach offensively, focusing on fundamentals and situational execution.
“Strategy-wise, yeah, we’re still playing small ball,” Sauer said. “Trying to stay as fundamental as we can and making sure we’re on top of everything.”
