St. Vincent is hoping to grab a spot in the district championship game after a 26-0 victory over Louisiana last Friday night at home.
Looking back at the game against the Bulldogs, Indians coach Tim Schumer seemed pleased with the way his team played.
“I thought, overall, it was good to come out and get the win — our first win in districts,” he said. “We had the bye week, so I felt like we had to knock a little bit of rust off, maybe just kind of being out of the flow, but I felt like the guys came out, responded and played well at times, but they definitely gave us some things that we need to keep working on and some things we need
to improve on in practice. We came out knowing what Louisiana’s game plan was going to be because we had played the coach the year before in the playoffs.
“We knew they were going to try to control the clock and limit the amount of time we got the ball or were able to have the ball on offense and just use their offense as a good defense to keep our offense busy. And they did that well. I think we only had maybe four drives in the second half, but we were able to capitalize on those drives and put points up on the board. I think we scored in three plays on our first scoring drive, and then we actually got a fumble on the kickoff and scored a couple plays later and just
kind of opened some things up for us.”
At the end of the half, the Indians had a 19-0 lead and were ready to come out in the third with energy to spare.
“We came out halftime and got a stop on defense,” Schumer said. “We put more points up on the board, and I coached a victory after that.”
The coach gave out some compliments for the defense for their play in the game.
“I thought our defense played really well,” he said. “Our inside linebackers, Carson House and Derek Garza, and our D lineman, really did a good job this week with their ground pattern. Just being able to get in there, shed blockers, and make tackles. They had a handful of big plays in there, and really this week was a big bend, but don’t break anything.
“They weren’t going to kill us with the big play, but they were just going to kind of get those small three- and four-yard plays here and there. But we couldn’t let that keep building up, and so I thought we did a good job just playing within ourselves and taking the shots when we needed to.
At 1 p.m. Saturday, the Indians will be playing Van-Far, a school district covering two
communities — Vandalia and Farber — at home.
“In districts, we’re the one seed, so we get to play at home again,” Schumer said. “It’ll be good to be at home. Farber — at home. “In districts, we’re the one seed, so we get to play at home again,” Schumer said. “It’ll be good to be at home. It’s a little bit different with playing. We’ll have to adjust to it and be ready for it. If we want to go past districts, you’re going to play on Saturdays anyway, so we might as well get some practice at what our routine would look like.”
