St. Vincent scored five runs in the sixth inning, but it wasn’t quite enough to get over the hump in a 7-6 loss to Advance at home on May 9.
After 6 1/2 innings, St. Vincent was trailing 7-1. The Indians closed the gap by scoring runs on three singles, a dropped third strike, and a walk, but it wasn’t enough, as Advance starter Caleb Henson closed out the game with three consecutive outs.
The Indians’ loss — which drops them to 6-12 on the season — came despite out-hitting Advance 8 to 6, led by Tyler Hennemann and Nick Buchheit, who had two hits each. Henneman finished 2-for- 3 with 1 RBI and 1 runs scored, while Buchheit was 2-for-4 with 1 run scored.
Advance (9-11) opened the scoring in the first inning after Braxton Kennedy grounded out, scoring one run. A double from Cole Curtis extended the Hornets’ lead to 2-0 in the top of the third inning, and a scarfice fly in the top of the fourth gave them a 3-0 lead.
St. Vincent answered in the bottom of the inning, when Buchheit scored on Hotop’s line drive to left field, making it 3-1. Advance added another three more in the fifth on an RBI single and a two-run error, then padded their lead in the top of the sixth with another RBI single, this time from Jameson Hamlin.
St. Vincent scored 5 runs on 4 hits in the bottom of the inning, as Hennemann, Jake Seabaugh, and Jack Patrick each hit RBI sinles, Henneman scored on a dropped third strike, and Andrew Hotop drew a 2-out, bases-loaded walk. Seabaugh started on the mound for St. Vincent and gave 5 runs, 3 earned, on 4 hits through 4 innings of work, striking out 6 and walking 3.
Buchheit out in 2 innings of relief work, giving up 1 earned run on 2 hits and striking out 5. Schumer gave up 1 run, struck out 1, and walked 2 in 1 inning. Henson gave up 6 runs on 8 hits through 7 innings, striking out 13 and walking 3. Welch and Hamlin, backto- back in the lineup, each collected two hits for Advance.
