Thrift store thanks community, highlights new location

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is thanking the Perry County community for its continued support following the opening of the organization’s new thrift store, which began operating at its new location last July.

The facility, located at 312 N. Jackson St., was made possible through donations to the Society’s building fund from local businesses and individual community members. Organization leaders said years of generosity and encouragement helped turn a long-standing goal of expanding the thrift store’s presence in Perry County into a reality.

The new location serves as both a thrift store and an assistance center, continuing a tradition of service that has earned the Society a strong reputation throughout the community. Residents who have not yet visited the new store are encouraged to stop by and see the updated space. The thrift store is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays, and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. The store is closed Wednesdays, Sundays and national holidays.

Andy Graf, president of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, said the thrift store’s mission reaches far beyond selling donated items.

“We’re a resource for the entire community,” Graf said. “That includes helping families in crisis, but it also means supporting churches, schools and organizations in practical ways.”

Graf said the thrift store regularly partners with groups such as New Life Mission, Options for Women and the retired priests at the seminary, while also supporting community events and ministries. Volunteers set aside donated toys for prizes at church picnics, lend props and items to school plays, and collect themed items for programs such as Vacation Bible School.

“It’s about communication and helping wherever we can,” Graf said. “If someone can use something, or even borrow something for a while, we want to help make that happen.”

In addition to thanking donors and shoppers, the Society also recognized the more than 100 volunteers who give their time at the thrift store, the assistance center and through other outreach efforts. Because all workers are volunteers, nearly 100 percent of the proceeds generated by the thrift store are returned directly to community members in need.

The impact of that support has been significant. In August 2025, the Society assisted 55 families with essential needs such as rent and utilities. In September 2025, another 43 families received help. Overall, 2025 totals show 51 in-person home visits and assistance provided to more than 500 local families.

Organization leaders emphasized that community generosity — through donations, thrift store purchases or volunteer service — directly supports neighbors facing difficult times across Perry County.

Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to speak with a thrift store manager or leave contact information with a cashier. Individuals who feel called to serve in a more hands-on role may also contact the Assistance Center at 573-547-1797 and leave a message for Andy or Sarah of the Special Needs Committee.
