The St. Vincent Indians responded to the previous week’s disappointment with a shutout victory over Bayless on senior night. The now 5-1 Indians defeated the Bronchos 35-0 with an efficient offense that mixed in running plays while relying on the pass to score.
Layton Cheaney scored first for the Indians, with a 14-yard rushing touchdown just two minutes into the game in the sixth play of the game. The run was set up by a 30 yard pass from Andrew Schumer to Case Huber.
Going into the second quarter, the Indians led 7-0. Four second quarter touchdowns gave them a 35-point lead at halftime and a running clock in the second half.
Schumer connected with Huber for a 10-yard passing touchdown on the first play of the quarter, and with Cheaney for a 12-yard passing touchdown minutes later to make the score 21-0.
The defense then came through for the next score, Hunter Mattingly picked off the Bronchos quarterback at midfield and returned the interception for a touchdown. Mattingly stayed in to play quarterback on the ensuing two-point conversion, where he connected with Quinton Doza to make the score 29-0.
The final scoring play of the game came for St. Vincent late in the second quarter on a “hook and ladder” trick play. Schumer connected a short pass to Huber, who quickly lateralled the ball to Gavin Hotop who ran it in 22 yards for the touchdown.
According to Huber, the play had been practiced and run before, and they had planned to break it out on a special occasion.
“We convinced coach to run it sophomore year, and we were like ‘its senior night, we got to run it back’,” Hotop said. “And he was down with it as long as it was set up right. We came out, everyone had a huge smile on their face, he got out there, tossed the ball to me, and I ran as fast as I could down to the end zone.”
“They were talking about that all week,” head coach Tim Schumer added. “We ran it in the past, and they dreamt it up and convinced me that we should do it. But I told them it had to be the right situation. And so we got the right situation, or at least what we were looking for. And they went out and executed it. I wanna tell Gavin that I know how fast he is now, so I better see that on every play.”
After a missed extra point, the score was 35-0, still enough for the Indians to cruise through the second half with a running clock.
Schumer said he was happy with how his team was able to respond and play well following the tough loss the previous week at Valle Catholic
“I thought we had a great week of practice and came out and saw it on the field,” Schumer said.“We came out and executed on both sides of the ball and took care of what we needed to do.”
St. Vincent returns home this Friday night for homecoming, they will host Cuba, with a special delayed start time of 7:30 following an evening of homecoming festivities.
