The downtown square in Perryville has been taken over by scarecrows this October thanks to the Chamber of Commerce’s first annual scarecrow decorating contest.
According to director of operations Alex Lueders, the idea came from Ste. Genevieve, whose chamber of commerce has done a similar contest in the past.
“I fell in love with it when driving around and seeing everything,” Leuders said. “I wanted to give an opportunity to local businesses just to promote themselves and have a reason to make those client touches to ask for a vote and give them a reason to be able to call somebody and just check in and also just bring a little joy to the town. I feel like it’s something we could all use. It’s been really fun. We hoped for just a few scarecrows and we’re blown away at the amount that we got for the first year. So we’re excited and we are hoping to bring it back again next year.”
Businesses and organizations participating this year include the City of Perryville Public Works, City Hall, Park Center, Airport and Police department, US Bank, PHS National Art Honors Society, Incredible Edibles, Robinson Companies, MHP Auxiliary, Brewer Monument & Graphics, Journey Hospice and the Hope Center.

Trophies will be awarded to the first, second and third place scarecrows.
