Rev. John Gagnepain, C.M., 90, a devoted Vincentian priest whose life was marked by service, humility, and a deep love for God’s creation, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 15, 2025.
He was born on September 2, 1935, to Wallace (Si) and Gussie Gagnepain.
Fr. John was a man who found joy in simple, honest work and in the beauty of the outdoors. Long before his priestly ministry took him around the world in service to others, he grew up learning the value of hard work on the farm. Whether mending fences, baling hay, or spending quiet moments in the fields, he carried with him a lifelong appreciation for nature and the sense of purpose that comes from working with one’s hands. Those early lessons shaped the way he approached ministry — with steadiness, humility, and a willingness to help wherever he was needed.
A faithful Vincentian, Fr. John dedicated his life to the mission of St. Vincent de Paul — serving the poor, uplifting the marginalized, and offering Christ’s love to every person he encountered. He led the Midwest Province of the Vincentian order for a time, and he was known for his gentle spirit, thoughtful guidance, and the quiet strength with which he lived out his vocation.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Fr. John was a beloved brother of Eugene Gagnepain (Peggy), Lucy Brenner (Tony) and Joe Favier (Pat), as well as an uncle, friend, and spiritual guide to many others whose kindness touched countless lives.
His family, friends and community take comfort in knowing Fr. John lived his life exactly as he wished: close to God, close to nature, and close to the people he served. He will be deeply missed by his Vincentian community and his extended family, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The Wake will be held at St. Mary’s of the Barrens church in Perryville on Wednesday, November 19, with visitation starting at 5 p.m. and the service beginning at 7 p.m.
The Funeral will be held at St Mary’s of the Barrens church on Thursday, November 20, at 10:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Miraculous Medal Shrine, an organization close to Fr. John’s heart and reflective of his lifelong devotion to the Blessed Mother and the Vincentian mission.
May he rest in the peace of Christ, whom he served so thankfully.
