PARK HILLS — Retired Air Force Gen. Glen Van- Herck, one of the most accomplished military leaders to come from the region, will return home later this month to speak at Mineral Area College.

VanHerck will present “Today’s Challenging Strategic Landscape, at Home and Abroad” at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 28, inside the Cardinal Center on the college’s Park Hills campus. The event is free and open to the public, with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis.

A native of Bismarck, VanHerck’s journey to the highest levels of military leadership began in southeast Missouri. He attended Mineral Area College before continuing his education and entering the U.S. Air Force, where he would go on to build a distinguished career spanning more than three decades.

VanHerck retired in 2024 after serving as commander of U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM) and the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), two of the nation’s most critical defense organizations. In those roles, he was responsible for homeland defense, civil support, and aerospace warning and control for the United States and Canada.

Throughout his career, VanHerck held numerous leadership positions, including roles in strategic deterrence, global strike operations, and national security planning. As a command pilot, he logged more than 2,500 flight hours in the B-1 bomber and other aircraft and played a key role in shaping U.S. military readiness in an era defined by evolving global threats.

His experience gives him a unique perspective on modern security challenges, including cybersecurity threats, geopolitical tensions, and the complexities of maintaining domestic stability while addressing international conflicts.

College officials say his return to campus represents a meaningful opportunity for students and community members alike.

“We are incredibly proud to welcome General VanHerck back to Mineral Area College,” said Dr. Keith Zoromski, provost and vice president of academic affairs. “His story is an inspiration to our students, and his expertise is invaluable. This is an exceptional educational opportunity for our entire region.”

VanHerck’s appearance also underscores the impact of local institutions in shaping national leaders. From his beginnings in Bismarck and his time at Mineral Area College, his career reflects a path rooted in community, service, and opportunity. For many in the area, including those who knew his late father, Dr. Don VanHerck, a longtime Mineral Area College professor and school trustee, VanHerck’s success is also a reflection of a family legacy of education and public service. Friends and colleagues recall how proud his father was of his son’s accomplishments and the path that led from a small-town upbringing to the highest ranks of military leadership.

His presentation is expected to address both global and domestic concerns, offering insight into how international developments intersect with issues closer to home. Organizers say attendees can expect a timely and informative discussion of the strategic landscape facing the United States today.
