Perryville child with disability reaches for the stars

For as long as 12-year-old Zaine Clewis can remember, the night sky has held his imagination. While other kids may dream of baseball diamonds or video games, Zaine’s sights are set much higher — all the way to space.

Zaine, a Perryville resident born with physical disabilities that limit his mobility, has never let those challenges keep him from dreaming big. His fascination with the stars began early, his mother Brittney Clewis said, and it hasn’t slowed down since.

“Zaine has always been curious about how things work — rockets, planets, the space station,” Brittney said. “He’ll watch documentaries, study pictures of astronauts, and tell me which one he’s going to be like someday.”

That optimism and drive have made Zaine something of a local inspiration. At school, classmates and teachers have been captivated by his enthusiasm for science and discovery. He often shares fun facts about the planets during class and keeps a small collection of NASA stickers on his wheelchair.

“His excitement is contagious,” said one of his teachers. “If there’s a rocket launch happening, Zaine’s the first to tell everyone about it.”

Although Zaine’s condition sometimes limits his physical activity, it has never dimmed his sense of possibility. He participates in adaptive physical therapy sessions and works hard to strengthen his body, all while devouring books about space exploration. His favorite astronaut is Chris Hadfield, whose videos from the International Space Station have inspired millions of young dreamers.

“Zaine talks about being part of a space mission one day,” Brittney said. “He knows he might not be able to do everything other kids can, but he believes he can still help — maybe designing rockets, studying planets, or even working for NASA.”

That perseverance embodies a message of hope and imagination that reaches far beyond his own goals. In a world where obstacles can sometimes overshadow opportunity, Zaine’s determination reminds those around him that no dream is too far out of reach.

“He’s proof that you can aim for the stars, even if you have to start from a wheelchair,” Brittney said with a smile. “Zaine shows us all that limits are only what we let them be.”
