Evelyn Mote-Fabian has been named the May Elks Student of the Month at Perryville High School.
The daughter of Gustavo Mote-Andrade and Lucrecia Fabian Cruz, Mote-Fabian has been active in a variety of school activities during her high school career, including marching band, band, colorguard, girls soccer, National Honor Society and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.
Mote-Fabian credits several teachers for helping shape her high school experience, including Kersten Fulmer and Ryan Mueller.
“Mrs. Fulmer was the first teacher who really saw me,” Mote-Fabian said. “She knew when to step up and guide those who needed comfort or support. Her advice, strength and kindness inspired me to stay strong through tough moments and be kind to others.”
She said Fulmer’s positive influence helped guide her toward a future career in education.
Mote-Fabian also pointed to Mueller as an important mentor during her time at PHS.
“He inspired me not to fear or overthink the future and to take life one day at a time,” she said. “He always made time to listen and help me find ways to move forward. Because of him, I’ve grown into a more positive and active person.”
Following graduation, Mote-Fabian plans to attend Mineral Area College before transferring to Southeast Missouri State University to earn a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education. She hopes to eventually return to Perryville to teach and support the local school district and community.
In addition to her career goals, she hopes to travel and experience different cultures.
Mote-Fabian encourages younger students to push beyond their fears and embrace new opportunities.
“Don’t let fear or the opinions of others control your potential, growth or self-worth,” she said. “You’re capable of achieving anything you put your effort into. Step out of your comfort zone, try new things and take on challenges. Most importantly, enjoy every moment, because time moves fast.”
