He was the city’s mayor from 1978 to 1980 and served two terms as alderman — from 1976 to 1978 and 1991 to 2008.

Bergman was born Feb. 2, 1927, to Frank and Margaret Bergman. He and his wife, Lois, were married May 6, 1950, in Belleville, Ill. She died in 2021.

Bergman served in the United States Naval Reserves during World War II and was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, American Legion Post 133 and the Perryville Country Club.

He worked at Armour Foods as a quality control engineer and then went to work at Prince Gardner as a time study engineer. Bergman later became an administrator at the Perry County Nursing Home.

Several people who worked with Bergman at the nursing home recalled Bergman as being kind to the residents and on a first-name basis with his staff. He was also fondly remembered for his involvement in the community
