Elaine M. Nessmith, 79, of Altenburg, died Saturday, October 5, 2024 at Ste. Genevieve Care Center in Ste. Genevieve.

She was born February 27, 1945 in Watersneet, Mich.

She is survived by three daughters, Julie Voelker of Saint Mary, Caryn (Jerry) Kambitsis of Lake in the Hills, IL, Laurie (Rod) Greenfield of Stevensville, MD; son, Eric (Amy) Christiansen of Aurora, IL; sister, Sherry Timan of Hurley, WI; grandchildren, Vincent, Nikolas & Emily Kambitsis; Bennett, Lindsay & Grant Christiansen; Matthew & Tori Fedora; Great Grandchildren, Trey & Trystan Helm and soon to be born Lilah Keesee.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Jefferson Nessmith; Father, Gust Timan; Mother, Helen (Pelto) Timan.

Elaine was raised in rural Ironwood Township, in the north woods of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, where her lifelong love of nature and animals was nurtured. The simple pleasures of observing the beauty of the north woods, searching for agates on the beaches of Lake Superior, and appreciating the quiet solitude of a deep snowy winter day with a good book and a cup of coffee by the wood stove were some of her favorite memories. Elaine spent her young adult years in suburban Chicago, where she raised her four children, volunteered with both Girls Scouts and the Cub Scouts, taught Sunday School at First Presbyterian Church in Glen Ellyn, and was involved in the PTA.

Elaine made her home in Altenburg after her retirement, where she continued her enjoyment of rural life and the natural beauty of East Perry County. The family is planning a gathering in her honor at Lake Superior in Ironwood, Michigan at a later date.

Special thanks to the wonderful nurses, CNA’s, med techs and staff at the Sainte Genevieve Care Center in Sainte Genevieve, along with the wonderful nurses of Crown Hospice in Cape Girardeau. Your kind and compassionate care of our mother will never be forgotten.
