POPLAR BLUFF — The VA Heartland Network (VISN 15) has announced the appointment ofKevin R. Bass as the new medical center director of the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff that became effective Oct. 20.
“We are excited that Mr. Bass has become the new medical center director at the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center,” said Mrs. Angela Athmann, Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN 15) interim network director. “His sound leadership qualities and proven experience will be valuable assets for the health care system, the employees and volunteers, and most importantly, for the ceterans we are honored to serve.”
Bass is a distinguished senior health care executive and Army veteran who culminated over 30 years of exemplary service as a Medical Service Corps officer, retiring at the rank of colonel. His military career is marked by a series of progressive executive leadership positions that reflect his extensive expertise and commitment to excellence in health care management.
Throughout his tenure, Bass held pivotal roles, including assistant deputy of Health Affairs and assistant secretary of the Army-Manpower and Reserve Affairs. He also served as the director of the Colorado Military Health System and Evans Army Community Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Ireland Army Community Hospital in Fort Knox, Ky. In these capacities, he was instrumental in developing Department of Defense (DoD) health care policies, leading organizational transformations, and managing multidisciplinary teams of health care professionals. His leadership ensured the effective delivery of medical services to over 300,000 beneficiaries, encompassing active service members, their families, and veterans.
Bass’s operational experience includes deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq, where he supported Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. His contributions in these challenging environments underscore his dedication to providing quality health care under the most demanding conditions.
Academically, Bass holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from North Georgia University, a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the University of South Florida, and a Master of Science in Management (MScM) from Troy State University. Additionally, he completed a Senior Service College (SSC) Fellowship with the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) at the Department of Health and Human Services in Washington, D.C., further enhancing his leadership capabilities in health care preparedness and response.
