Manufacturing and logistic companies are looking for a way to quickly and easily find employees to fill shifts in the ever-changing landscape.
One of those ways is the turning of age technology route.
Companies are turning to an app called Veryable to help them do this.
“It’s only for manufacturing and logistic companies at this time,” Perry County Economic Development Executive Director Crystal Jones said. “It’s not for any certain business, but companies in those industries. It’s an on-demand labor app.”
Essentially companies in those industries can sign on to post available jobs they have on the app. Then a worker who is working on-demand, which means having no set schedule.
“Maybe it’s a single mom who only has a day or two open with certain times per week,” Jones said. “It could be for a retiree who wants something to do for a day or two per week. Those are the types of people this app targets.”
The app matches those people with the jobs that are available based on the times the workers are able to work.
The Veryable website says its app is “the on-demand marketplace for manufacturing, logistics and warehousing labor. Our flexible labor solution connects businesses with high-quality workers at the click of a button, enabling higher productivity and a competitive edge. For workers, Veryable provides immediate access to work, the ability to control their own schedule, opportunities to build new skills”
It currently is available in more than 20 states in the U.S.
Gilster Mary-Lee is the only company in Perryville that is currently using the app and Jones believes it is limited because of knowledge of the service.
“It’s not widely known in Southeast Missouri,” Jones said. “They need to build a bigger labor pool.”
Jones said on-demand labor is a growing industry.
“On-demand labor is one solution to the challenges that businesses are having,” Jones said. “I don’t know of any more apps except for Veryable that is matching those workers and not looking for a full-time worker with a set schedule. There is the only one that is being used locally. I do think a good solution to fill those positions in the manufacturing industry that you don’t necessarily need skilled labor to perform. They can teach someone in a matter of hours how to do the job. Those types of positions are the ones that companies are having a hard time filling. This could help fill those workforce gaps.”
