Turn lane on Highway 51 coming this summer

The Missouri Department of Transportation recently announced that a $1.5 million construction contract was awarded to Lappe Cement Finishing for the installation of a turn lane on Highway 51 from Old St. Mary’s Road to Brenda Avenue.

“This will really help open up the bypass for future development, it will be a nice addition for Highway 51,” said Perry County Economic Development Authority director Crystal Jones at the May 17 Perryville Board of Aldermen meeting.

The contract officially was awarded May 4 by the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission and is one of eight improvements scheduled in the Southeast District, though the only one specific to Perry County. The total amount of the contract is $1,583,522 and the work is scheduled to begin early next month.

Route 51 in Perry County will be reduced to one lane with a 10-foot width restriction as construction crews perform center turn lane additions, according to MoDOT. This section of roadway is located from Route T to Old St. Mary’s Road in Perryville.

Weather permitting, work will take place Monday, June 6 through Tuesday, November 1 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. The work zone will be marked with signs. Motorists are urged to use extreme caution while traveling near the area.
