Three sustain injuries in Highway 51 accident

Three individuals were taken to area hospitals following a two-vehicle accident May 12 at approximately 3:30 p.m.

Dalton J. Schamberg, 18, of Perryville and Lori R. Schumer, 55, of St. Mary were involved in the May 12 crash on Highway 51 that needed the Jaws of Life device to free one of the individuals at the crash scene, according to assistant fire chief Bill Jones of the Perryville Fire Department.

The accident occurred on Highway 51 near Raccoon Lane and included 1992 Ford F-250 driven by Schamberg and a 2018 Ford Edge driven by Schumer, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Schamberg, who was northbound in his Ford truck, crossed the center of the roadway and into the southbound lane. Schumer's vehicle struck the front center of Schamberg's vehicle head on, according to the accident report. Both vehicles traveled off the right side of the roadway.

The Perryville Fire Department was dispatched to the scene at approximately 3:45 p.m. and got the door opened up within a couple minutes, The vehicles collided pretty much head-on, Jones said.

Schamberg as well as a passenger in his vehicle, Eric M. Lemerand, 50, of Perryville, were both taken to St. Francis Medical Center by Perry County ambulance.

Schamberg's injuries were termed serious by the MSHP. The injuries to Lemerand and Schumer were moderate, according to the accident report.

Schumer was taken to Perry County Memorial Hospital by a private vehicle.

Both vehicles involved in the crash were towed from the scene.
