A traffic stop by Perry County Sheriff’s deputies Friday resulted in numerous gun and drug charges for five Memphis residents. Demarcus A. Williams, 31, was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a dangerous felon, receiving stolen property and tampering with a motor vehicle, all felony charges. Curtis Howard, Antavious T. Powell and Shanell M. Taylor, all 19, along with Netanya R. Taylor, 20 were charged with possession of marijuana and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. According to a report from the Perry County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were notified at approximately 5:38 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, by the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Department that a black 2020 Nissan Armada with Florida registration was reported stolen in Atlanta, and had been located through its satellite radio traveling northbound on Interstate 55 near the 102 mile marker. Perry County deputies responded and located the vehicle, but before they could stop it, the vehicle left the interstate at the Perryville exit and pulled into the Moto Mart gas station at 1600 S. Perryville Blvd. “Upon stopping, the rear driver-side passenger attempted to exit the vehicle,” wrote Dep. Ethan Rendleman in his report. “I drew my department-issued firearm and ordered the passenger back into the vehicle, which he complied. I held the vehicle until further assistance arrived.” Additional deputies, along with officers from the Perryville Police Department, got all the occupants — including three juveniles — out of the vehicle and separated. A computer on Williams — who was identified by a Tennessee Non-Driver’s License — revealed him to have no driving status, no wants or warrants and to be a felon who was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and attempted murder by a Shelby County, Tenn., court in 2008. An immediate search of the vehicle revealed a Springfield XO 9mm handgun located in the glove compartment; a Glock 44 .22LR handgun inside a plastic bag in the in the center-row floorboard, and two baggies — one weighing 0.8 grams and the other 3 grams — of a green leafy substance later identified as marijuana. A computer check on the Springfield handgun’s serial number showed it as stolen out of Memphis. After the vehicle was towed from the scene, a secondary search of the vehicle was conducted, and two more small bags of marijuana were discovered in a pink purse, along with rolling papers in a backpack.
