Senior center in East End to open in June

It was a unanimous decision, it just took time to get enough individuals to be a part of the vote.
Perry County Senior Citizens Service Center Inc. Board voted 5-0 in favor of a motion to reopen the EPC Center at a meeting April 28. Four board members (three voting) were present while two more called and voted by phone.
The structure in Altenburg, which is owned by the East Perry County Community Fair Board, is located at 200 Church Street.
“We’ve been fighting this thing it seems like forever,” said board president Tom Gibbar. “I would like to see the (EPC) center open. We need to do this on a trial basis.”
Board member Bob Post motioned to open the center on a trial basis.
His motion was seconded by board member June Leuckel.
Post is optimistic that with the weather warming up, it will lead to an increase in the number of individuals visiting both the Perryville and Altenburg locations.
“We are going into the summer months,” Post said. “It should be better then.”
In addition to Post and Leuckel, others supposing the decision to re-open the Altenburg location were Susan LaRose, Tim Tarrillion and Kathy Donze.
“I think that seems fair and logical,” Donze said, prior to voting.
Gibbar did not cast a vote.

By trial basis, Post wants the decision to open the Altenburg location to be re-evaluated in three months.
“We’ll be able to make a (final) determination after that,” Post said.
Perry County Senior Citizens Service Center Inc. administrator Jennifer Freeman said her goal was to have the center in Altenburg open by Wednesday, June 1.
Painting and cleaning has been done. Minor remodeling work needs completed, and a freezer and refrigerator must be purchased, according to Freeman.
The board initially attempted to make a decision the previous week, April 21, but could not do so as they didn’t have enough members available to reach a quorum.
The East Perry County Senior Center first opened in April 2009. Similar to the Perryville location, it is made possible through revenue from the Perry County senior services tax, which was adopted in 2008.
The next meeting will take place Thursday, May 12, at 12:30 p.m. at the Perry County Senior Center.
Board members elections will take place at that meeting, and efforts will be made to notify seniors about the May 12 meeting.
“I’d like to send something out with every home-delivered meal,” Gibbar said.
Up to nine individuals can be nominated to serve on the Senior Citizens Service Center Inc. Board.
The April 28 meeting adjourned at about 1 p.m.
