Robert Eugene McDermott, 87, of Independence passed away Saturday, Feb. 20, 2021 at St. Luke’s East Hospital in Lee’s Summit. Robert was born Jan. 2, 1934 in Brewer to Thomas Joseph and Sylvia (Grass) McDermott and spent his early life there, graduating from St. Vincent High School in Perryville. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and proudly served during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in Hawaii and was manager of the Army Swim Team.
Upon discharge from the Army he relocated to Independence and owned and operated McDermott Moving Company until he sold the business in early 2000, but continued to work there until he retired in 2020.
He enjoyed traveling, keeping up his pool and yard and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Independence Planning Commission, St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus at the church.

Survivors include; a son, Thomas McDermott and wife Kellie; a daughter, Maureen Lathrom and husband Joe; a sister, Carolyn Kruth; six grandchildren, Erin Gregory and husband Philip, Kelli Gervy, Jared Lathrom and wife Ashlyn, Kirstie McDermott and fiancé, Tegrey Moot, Tanner McDermott and Blake McDermott and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Linda in 2017, a son Patrick McDermott and 11 brothers and sisters.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 27, 2021 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 600 N. Liberty St., Independence. Burial with full military honors will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m., until service time Saturday at the church. Donation may be made in his name to the Bright Futures Fund P.O.
