Pirates bounce back with win over Borgia

The Perryville boys soccer team was able to show its resiliency in multiple ways as it got back into the win column. The Pirates bounced back from a lopsided loss to Notre Dame the week before, to come away with a 6-3 victory over St. Francis Borgia on Thursday at the Bank of Missouri soccer complex.
The victory wasn’t perfect, but as Perryville coach Jerry Fulton noted, the team got the win.
“We did enough to get the job done,” Fulton said. “Borgia has been a good team in the past and they have some good players this year. They are better than their record.”
Perryville (4-1) came in shorthanded without its top two goalkeepers as both Ty Baudendistel and Aiden Garris missed the game because of injury. Ashton Anschultz got the start and played well making seven saves in what turned out to be a physical contest.
“I thought he did good considering he was just thrown into the fire,” Fulton said. We knew Ty was going to be out, but we had Aiden to be the backup goalie and he got hurt (Wednesday). Ashton played well in the JV game against Notre Dame and we felt like he earned that shot.”
Perryville received contributions from a variety of guys as Dayton Strattman led the way with two goals and two assists to his credit. Bryce Brewer added two goals and one assist. Carson Adams chipped into the scoring output with one goal and two assists, while Stratton Kaempfe added one goal and Dane Lauck dished out one assist.
The Pirates jumped on the Knights early when Kaempfe hit a ball off the crossbar and Brewer’s shot was saved at close range seconds later. The Pirates finally broke through in the sixth minute when Kaempfe scored on a pass over the top of the defense from Dayton Strattman. The Pirates pelted four shots in the first six minutes and outshot the Knights 20-10 in the game.

Adams added the Pirates’ second goal in the 20th minute and Fulton liked what he saw from his team in that time.
“We played well in that first 20 minutes or so and then went into a lull and got back to playing Perryville soccer,” Fulton said. “I thought that we were about half of a pass off in the second half and couldn’t get into a rhythm after halftime.”
The Knights were able to take advantage of several of those minutes when Perryville wasn’t at its best and came away with some points. Anschultz made a diving save in the 24th minute, but Borgia (0-6) found the back of the net minutes later on a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. Anschultz went up to catch the ball, but collided with several players causing him to fall down. The ball went right to Borgia’s Tyler Kromer who had a shot at an open net and narrowed Perryville’s lead to 2-1.
The Pirates bounced back after each of the Knight goals and scored within the next three minutes of each tally.
“We were able to answer every one of their goals,” Fulton said. “which is something you like to see. Each one of their goals snapped us back into focus and opened our eyes a little bit. We don’t want to allow three goals every game, we were able to answer them.”
Strattman scored less than one minute later and for good measure Brewer chipped in with a goal one second before the halftime buzzer for a 4-1 halftime lead.
The Pirates will continue their season when it travels to Hillsboro today for a conference matchup.
“We want to part putting some wins in the column and keep on going,” Fulton said.
