PHS soccer falls in district final

The dream season for Perryville soccer ended much earlier than the team would have hoped.
St. Pius X made a lone second half goal stand up as the Lancers defeated the Pirates 1-0 in the Class 2, District 1 championship game on May 17 at St. Pius High School.
The loss ended Perryville’s season and bid for the program’s third straight district title and another deep postseason run after the Pirates finished fourth in Class 2 one year ago.
A close contest was something fans in attendance should have expected after the Pirates won 1-0 in overtime in the two team’s regular season match-up.
The game’s outcome could have changed dramatically in the opening minutes of the game as Carlie Holdman rang a shot off the post in the third minute.
Perryville also had a corner a few minutes later that was a good scoring chance as well, but to no avail.

For the rest of the half, the Pirates and Lancers battled to a 0-0 draw at the half.
St. Pius nearly scored on a corner kick itself. Emily Vatterott sent a dangerous ball into the box resulting in a scrum in front of the goal that was eventually cleared by Perryville.
The play was something that was a precursor of things to come for the Lancers.
St. Pius senior Riley Cappozzo, started her run from outside the box and struck the ball with her right foot before it touched the ground on a corner kick in the 54th minute to give St. Pius its 1-0 advantage.
Perryville had several chances for a goal in the waning minutes but were denied by the Lancers after they put an extra defender in the back.
Perryville finished the season at 16-4 and will graduate five seniors.
