The Pirates finally put together what Perryville softball coach Lilly Pecaut called a “complete game.”
Everything came together as Perryville got the offense and pitching to come away with a 15-0 victory over Herculaneum in four innings on Tuesday.
“It definitely felt good,” Pecaut said. “Everything we did tonight was great. I don’t think we could have done anything better.”
Just one day after being shutout by Kelly in a loss, the Pirates came out swinging.
After being blanked in the first inning, the Pirates had multiple runs in every inning after that, including eight in the four inning as everyone came to bat in the inning.
“Our bats finally came alive,” Pecaut said. “We were more aggressive at the plate. I felt like we had a lot of energy out on the field in general.”
Kylee Stortz got the offense going in the second inning with a lead-off triple that was followed up by a RBI single by Breanna White to give Perryville a 1-0 lead. Perryville added runs on a wild pitch and single by Brewer to widen the Pirate advantage to 3-0.
That was really all that starting pitcher Alyson Stortz needed in the circle.
The junior was dominant on the afternoon, as she allowed just two hits in the game and recorded 11 strikeouts. The only out that was not recorded via the strikeout was a groundout to first in the fourth inning
“She really had her curveball working tonight,” Pecaut said. “She was working the zone and spotting her pitches where they needed to be. When she has everything working like that she’s hard to beat.”
Up until the third inning, Perryville was driving in runs with singles, but then they found some power. After a Kylee RBI single to give Perryville a 5-0 lead, White hit a two-run home run that widened the lead to 7-0 for the Pirates.
It was the first home run hit by any Pirate player this season.
“That was great to see,” Pecaut said. “I was really excited for Bre because I know that she works hard and to see it pay off with a home run is awesome.”
Then came the big fourth inning in which Alyson Stortz had a two RBI double, Makayla Pecaut added a run scoring double as well. Caroline Gremaud also drove in a run with a single. Pecaut noted that she was also able to get some of the younger players in the game to get the some valuable varsity experience.
“Anytime I can do that, it’s great,” she said. “Having these games where we have a good lead and am able to get the younger girls only helps us in the future.”
Perryville (6-10) will continue their season at home today against Jefferson R-7 at 4: 30 p.m.
